GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a natural hormone your body produces when you eat. The medications work by mimicking this hormone to help regulate appetite, slow digestion, and control blood sugar, which supports weight loss.
You may be eligible if: You have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition (like high blood pressure, prediabetes, or PCOS). Your eligibility will be assessed by a partner clinician as part of a full health review to make sure treatment is safe and suitable for you.
Results are individual, but clinical trials show significant weight loss. Patients on clinically led programmes can lose up to 22% of their body weight in 10 months. Your personal results will depend on your own circumstances and response to the treatment.
There's no 'one-size-fits-all' answer, as the best medication is a clinical decision based on your unique health needs. While treatments show very high average weight loss in trials, the independent clinician who conducts your private consultation will determine the safest and most suitable option for you.
The safest option is simply the one that is right for your personal medical history. This is determined by the independent clinician during your confidential assessment, and they will only prescribe a medication if they are confident it is a safe choice for you.
Most people tolerate weight loss injections well, but like any medication, side effects can happen, especially in the first few weeks. The most common include nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, fatigue, and changes in appetite. Each medication has a slightly different side effect profile.
In Ireland, access to weight loss medications through the HSE, for reimbursement under the Medical Card or Drugs Payment Scheme, is subject to specific and strict criteria. Currently, some weight loss medications may be approved for reimbursement for patients with a BMI over 35 and a significant weight-related health condition. This typically requires an application from a hospital consultant and an assessment to ensure the patient meets the clinical criteria set out by the HSE. For patients who do not meet these strict reimbursement criteria, these medications can still be obtained with a private prescription from a doctor, based on the general eligibility guidelines (BMI ≥30 or ≥27 with a comorbidity). Orlistat is also available on prescription from a GP or can be bought over the counter at a lower dose.
